METEROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS.

     REMARKS.— The present week has been remarkable for a magnificent aurora borealis on the 14th, which was seen at Clifton, Petersfield, Uckfield, Aldershot, Ramsgate, Wisbech, Norwich, Highfield House, and Beeston; and remarkable also for a violent gale, which commenced on the 20th, and lasted three days. There was much ozone. The amount of cloud ranged between 6½ and 8½. The greatest range of temperature occurred at Petersfield, 22᛫2 , and the least at Norwich and Malvern,13 . The greatest heat was at Helston and Beeston, 54 (in nearly every place it was above 52). The greatest cold was Uckfiold, 29 ; at Helston and Malvern never falling below 37. The mean temperature was 48᛫6 at Helston, 43᛫3 at Clifton, 43᛫1 at Carlisle, 39᛫9 at Uckfield, and between 40᛫8 and 42᛫8 at other places. Rain fell on two days at Helston, Aldershot, and Ramsgate; on three at Norwich, Derby, Highfield House, and Leeds; on five at Manchester; and on four at other stations. The amount of rain was 0᛫9 at Petersfield, 0᛫8 Manchester, 0᛫6 at Uckfield, 0᛫5 at Leeds and Carlisle, 0᛫3 at Helston. Wisbech, and Derby; 0᛫2 at Aldershot, Ramsgate, Highfield House, and Beeston ; 0᛫1 at Clifton, Norwich, and Malvern. Helston.—Gale on 16th, 18th, 19th, 20th. Clifton. —Gale from W on 19th, and NW on 20th; snow on 20th. Petersfield.—Wet and stormy, with a high barometer. Uckfield.— Slight frost on 15th and 16th; 17th and 18lh, rain; 20th, lightning and thunder at 3a.m.; brisk NW wind all day. Aldershott —Gale violent on 19th and 20th. Ramsgate.—15th, a slight return of aurora borealis; 19th and 20th, lightning; gale on 20th from WNW, commencing at eleven p.m., and lasting till one p.m. of 21st; the tide was very high, doing considerable damage; any casual visitor on the sands would not have recognised them—it was like a complete wreck for half a mile—small pieces of wood, iron bars, stones, bricks, &c., quite a débris. Wisbeach.—18th, gale commenced at 9.30 p.m.; on 19th. at 3.35 a.m., pressure 18lb. on square foot; and again at 10 a.m. on 20th. Norwich. —19th and 20th, a gale. Malvern. —From evening of 18th to end of week, violent hurricane. Manchester. —The end of week very rough and stormy, accompanied by hail, rain, thunder and lightning: the mean temperature of the week 2᛫6 above the average of 13 years. Highfield House.—15th, again aurora borealis, but faint; 17th, solar halo; 18th, gale commenced at eleven p.m. from W; very violent; maximum pressure 17 lb. on square foot; the gale continued throughout the 18th, 19th, and till two p.m. on 20th; on the morning of 20th, gusts in squalls with snow, reaching 19llb. pressure. Carlisle. —Ozone again very abundant; high wind on 18th, 19th, and 20th.
