PETERSFIELD.
NARROW ESCAPE.—On Sunday afternoon last a lad, named Biden, son of Mr. W. Biden, Cooper, Sheep-street, nearly lost his life by drowning. It seems that he, with a number of others, sliding on the Heath Pond, which was but slightly frozen over, when he ventured too far and the ice gave way, and he was precipitated into the water. The ice being very thin it was some time before any one could approach to render assistance, and the poor lad was fast losing strength and consciousness, when a little boy, named Frank Lillywhite volunteered to take a rope out to him if another rope was fixed round his own body. This being done he started on his dangerous enterprise, and happily succeeded in conveying the rope to Biden, who was thus drawn ashore much exhausted, having been in the water nearly half-an-hour. We hope something will be done to reward Lillywhite for his praiseworthy conduct, which was especially commendable in one so young. we would venture to suggest that ropes and drags should be provided so as to be within easy reach in such an emergency; the cost could be but trifling, and we feel sure the requisite amount would be willingly subscribed by the towns-people.
