NATIONAL SCHOOL TREAT.—The annual treat to the children of the national schools was given on Thursday last. A sermon was preached by the Rev. M. A. Smelt, after which the boys, girls, and infants, numbering about 303, having marched down the High-street, headed by the drum and fife band of the Rifle Volunteer Corps, proceeded to a field near the school, kindly lent by Mr. E. Young, and there partook of tea and plum cake to their heart’s content. They then engaged in various sports provided for them in a larger field, belonging to Mr. Baker, of the Grange, and there spent a happy evening in racing for prizes, &c., &c. These schools are in a high state of efficiency, and reflect great credit on the master (Mr. Macfarland) and the mistress (Miss Myers), and also on Mrs. Simpson, who has for many years had charge of the infant school. The unavoidable absence of the Rev. J. M. Sumner was much regretted.
