PETERSFIELD.

NAVVIES AND THE HEN'S ROOST.—Within this last week several people in the neighbourhood of Petersfield have had their fowls stolen, and in spite of our energetic superintendent, Mr. Fey, and his active constables the thieves had avoided detection until Friday night last at about two o’clock, a.m., when two navvies were seen by police constable 119 G. Newman, coming into the town. Newman immediately suspected something wrong, and commenced searching them. He found they had a quantity of fowls underneath their frocks; whereupon a fight immediately commenced, but ended in the capture of one of the men, by the name of James, who had four fowls in his possession. The other got away, but afterwards, we are happy to say was apprehended by Mr. Superintendent Fey, about eight o’clock, a.m., in a house occupied by a brother of the above named, and seven more fowls were recovered, five being found underneath a bed upstairs; and from the quantity of newly-picked feathers which they found in the house there is no doubt that the inmates have been feasting on poultry at other people’s expense for some time. They were taken before R. Steel and G. Forbes, Esqrs., on Monday, and fully committed for trial on two distinct charges.
