THE ARMY

Yesterday the report of the company of Sappers and Miners ordered to survey Woolmer Forest, Sussex, for the purpose of forming a camp there, was sent into the War-office. Water is readily obtained, and the site is reported as admirably situated for an encampment. The whole of the persons occupying the land and Government houses have received notice to vacate, and a large body of troops will be assembled there early in the spring. The encampment is about six miles from Petersfield.

Hampshire Independent - Saturday 30 October 1858

It is now quite evident that the authorities of the War-Office have decided upon an encampment on Woolmer Forest, near Petersfield, and that every measure will be taken to carry out this project in the early part of the ensuing year for convalescent troops.
