PETERSFIELD.]—OPENING OF THE NEW BRANCH LINE OF RAILWAY.—It is now definitely arranged to open the branch line of railway from Petersfield to Midhurst, on Thursday the 1st of September, for public traffic. By working five trains a day each way, during the week, Sundays excepted, and on that day two trains, and according to the present arrangements, passengers leaving Midhurst during the week at 7.40 a.m. will arrive in London at 10.30, the last train leaves Petersfield for Midhurst at 9.20 p.m. on the arrival of the last London train down, and on Sundays the first train leaves Petersfield at 12.30 p.m., arriving at Midhurst at 1 o’clock, and the second train at 8 p.m., arriving at Midhurst at 8.30. The rolling stock for these arrangements are already at Midhurst, as well as the efficient staff, for superintending the working of the line. Preparations are also being made to commence the making of the new line from Petersfield to Bishops Waltham, and when done will open a more direct communication between Southampton, Mid-Sussex, and Kent.
