PETERSFIELD.

OPENING THE SPARROW SHOOTING SEASON.—On Monday last a select party met in the meadow adjoining the Volunteer Arms, for the purpose of opening the season with a sparrow shoot. The sport commenced at three o’clock, and continued throughout the afternoon, between sides chosen upon the ground, from a plentiful supply of sparrows, provided by, and under the practical attendance of “Smith,” of Portsea, till the store of birds were trapped off, and the shades of evening closed the contested matches. Some very good shooting was made; but, upon the whole, not of any high credit. At the conclusion, our sporting competitors and friends, in number about 40, repaired to the hotel, where a very capital dinner was in readiness, under the well arranged catering of the worthy host Morgan, which, it is needless to add, was done full justice to, and gave great satisfaction. Toast and song passed merrily round in social harmony, till the full hours of the night had struck their last, when a separation took place, after an evening spent in comfortable enjoyment.
