PENNY READINGS. — The first of these popular entertainments for the season took place at the Town-hall on Tuesday evening last, and attracted a large attendance. The Rev. R. E. Coles read a passage from Scott's "Lady of the Lake." Mr. Stowe read "Mother's last words," and also a passage from "David Copperfield." The proceedings opened with a piano-forte solo, played in admirable style by Master F. Williams. Two part-songs were sung by Dr. Leachman, the Rev. G. Leigh-Blake, and others, both of which were encored. Mr. Grattan Cooke also contributed greatly to the evening's amusement by singing, in his usual excellent style, two comic songs. It is expected that other "readings" will be given at short intervals during the remainder of the season.
