PETERSFIELD.—THE ELECTION.—The Petersfield election would take place yesterday, and Sir W. G. H. Jolliffe, Bart’s, return remains unopposed, though at one time there was some talk of a contest. The hon. baronet is, however, deservedly popular with his constituents, and his vote on the China question has met with general approval.
COUNTY ELECTION.—A severe contest is expected for the Northern Division of Hampshire. Mr. Melville Portal, one of the late members is again in the field, the other candidates are Mr. Beach, and Mr. Sclater.
