The Petersfield and Midhurst is finished, and the directors hoped to have it opened before this for traffic. They have, however, been compelled to defer this for the present, having been required, as in the case of the Andover and Redbridge, to make certain additions to the permanent way; but in the course of this present month the line will be again ready for inspection.

PETERSFIELD.—THE MIDHURST RAILWAY —The South Western directors state in their report that the works on the Andover and Redbridge line are progressing. The requirements of the Board of Trade have rendered it necessary to strengthen the permanent way beyond that originally authorised by that department, which will involve some delay and expense; but not withstanding this, the directors see no reason why the line should not be ready for opening throughout by the end of the year. The Petersfield and Midhurst line is finished, and the directors hoped to have opened it before this for traffic. They have, however, been compelled to defer this for the present, having been required, as in the case of the Andover and Redbridge Line, to make certain additions to the permanent way; but in the course of this present month the line will be again ready for inspection. The engineer reports that the contractor is making satisfactory progress on the Southampton and Netley line and that the works are well executed. Mr. Wyndham S. Portal has resigned his seat on the direction.
