CHRISTMAS STOCK MARKET.—This market was held on Wednesday last, and for quantity and quality has seldom or never been surpassed. We heard it very generally remarked that the market was fixed for too early, a day as the buyers were disinclined to purchase so long beforehand, and to this was ascribed the flatness which pervaded the market during the early part of the day, although we understand that ultimately a large number were cleared off. Amidst so much that is excellent we always feel that there is a degree of invidiousness in attempting to particularize, but we believe that the opinion of the best judges will bear us out in assigning the first place to a pair of Devons exhibited by Mr. E. Chalcraft. Mr. John Ring had 13 very superior Herefords, the whole lot being of uniform excellence; they were bought by Messrs. Franklyn, of Titchfield and Wickham. Mr. Seward, of Weston also maintained his usual high position, his beasts being all of first-rate quality; Lady Fetherston’s runts were, as usual, much admired; Mr. John Berry had a choice lot of Devons; Mr. Coryton’s beasts were very fine, and so were those of Mr. John Chase, Mr. C. Parr, Mr. H. Chase, Mr. C. Harris, &c. There was nothing extraordinary in mutton if we except a pen of half a score exhibited by Mr. E. Chalcraft, bred by Mr. Seward, these were remarkably fine. The greatest marvel of the day, however, was four fat hogs belonging to Mr. C. Harris, of Durford, which were estimated at 25 score a piece one with the other, making 300 stones for the four; they were bought by our townsman Mr. Edward Young.
