AMATEUR DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT.—Some few weeks since an idea was started by one or two individuals connected with the Petersfield Cricket Club of getting up a dramatic entertainment and that idea has been carried out most successfully in the course of the present week. The project was submitted to the approval of several of the gentry of the neighbourhood, and the following list of patrons was speedily obtained:— (see above)
The pieces selected were Tom Taylor’s comedy, ‟Still Waters Run Deep,” and the farce of ‟The Irish Tiger.” The performers were exclusively amateurs. The following is the cast of characters (see above)
The performance took place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in the Dolphin Assembly-rooms, which was kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. Crafts. The stage was erected by two members of corps dramatique (Messrs. Lawrence an Wright), and was greatly admired for its elegance of structure and for its chaste and beautiful decorations, in the latter department Mrs. Crafts very kindly assisted, and displayed her usual taste. The music was under the direction of Mr. Finley, assisted by Mrs. Edward Faulkner and Miss Aldous. A song by the former lady in beautiful style in the interval between the pieces was rapturously encored. With regard to the performers we think we cannot do better than adopt the stereotyped phrase ‟where all acquitted themselves so well it would be invidious to particularise.” The prologue, written expressly for the occasion by Miss Nichols, of Petersfield, was admirably spoken by R. S. Cross, Esq.
