HEATH FAIR.—This fair was held on Thursday, the 6th inst., and for a marvel, its patron saint (St Swithin) was propitious, and the day passed off clear and bright, without the usual accompaniment of drenching rain, doubtless to the great delectation of the pleasure-seekers, of whom there was as usual a very large number from the surrounding neighbourhood. ‟The rail” too, brought its meed of visitors, both for business and pleasure, so that our quiet little town was all on the qui vive. The supply of lean stock was plentiful, but it was remarked that the beasts were small and the quality scarcely up to the average; of sheep about 6,000 were penned, a less number than we have sometimes seen, and of these a great many were not sold, but those which found purchasers fetched good prices. Horses were about the average both in quantity and quality.
