PETERSFIELD — ELECTION OF MAYOR.—On Tuesday the merry peals of the church bells announced the time approaching for the election of Mayor for the ensuing year. The jury having assembled in accordance with ancient custom at the Red Lion Hotel, at 11 o’clock, proceeded, headed by the bailiff, with the  mace, constable, tythingmen, &c., and the Recorder, William Williams, Esq., to the Town Hall, when the jury having chosen Mr. Harffey foreman, the late Mayor R. S. Cross, Esq., Surgeon, was again re-elected, and the following officers chosen, viz.:—Mr. W. Triggs, constable for the Lower half hundred of Finchdean; Messrs. C. Knight and T. Sturt, tythingmen; Messrs. Small and Barnes, leather-sealers; Mr. W. Carter, bailiff and crier; and Mr. E. Wakeford, beadle; after which the procession reformed, and returned to the Lion. At an early hour in the afternoon the party again assembled, and sat down to one of Mr. Craft’s well-known spreads, which fully carried out his established catering proficiency. The chair was taken by the Mayor, supported by the Recorder, James Ross, Esq., and a few friends, with the jury, officers, &c., when an agreeable evening was spent, but the spirit of the meeting was somewhat damped by the recent and ?? a loss sustained by the worthy and esteemed member for the borough.
