— A highway rate for the parish of Briton was signed.
— Maliciously Pulling up Turnips,—William Norgate, of Newton Valence, was charged with malicious damage by pulling up half a bushel of Swede turnips, in a field belonging to Mr. Henry Warner, in the parish of Hawkley, on the 30th of January last.—Defendant was seen by Mr. Henry Warner, jun., to go to the field and pull the turnips and put them in a sack which he had with him, and as he was about to walk off with them he was accosted by Mr. Warner, and told that he would be summoned before the Bench. Defendant did not deny the charge, but begged to be dealt with leniently, as he had just had all his goods seized for rent. Fined 1s., damage 2d., costs 7s. 6d.
— Taking a Pheasant.—George Baker, of Buriton, was convicted on the Information of Arnold Stroud, with taking a pheasant from a gin, on the 4th inst. A previous conviction was proved.—Fined 5s., and costs, 7s. 6d.
— Burning Furze.—George Luff charged John Lipscombe with malicious injury In carrying away and burning three bundles of furze belonging to him (Luff).— It appeared from the evidence that the parties live In the same row of cottages at Horndean, and have a right In common to a certain outbuilding, that complainant had placed the furze bushes in question near the said outbuilding, and that while he was away from home on Thursday, the 5th inst., defendant removed them to an adjoining field, and set fire to them. — Lipscomb alleged in defence that the bushes did not belong to complainant, and that had no business to place them where he did; but as he called no witnesses to substantiate this assertion, he was convicted and adjudged to pay 8s. 6d., including fine, damage, and costs.
