PETTY SESSIONAL BUSINESS, Tuesday. Aug. 11.—Present: The Hon. J. J. Carnegie (chairman). J. Waddington, Esq., W. Nicholson, Esq , M.P., and Captain Sandeman.

JOSEPH NORRIS, belonging to the 20th Regiment, stationed at Aldershot, and —Woodhatch, of the Royal Artillery station, at Portsmouth, on the previous day, at Horndean, by PC. Henry Grant, were ordered to be sent to their respective regiments.

ASSAULT CASE.

JONATHAN JANNAWAY, general dealer (a peculiar-looking, middle-aged man, noseless and very deaf), was charged with assaulting Geo. Lee.
Complainant deposed to living at Weecock Farm, in the parish of Catherington, as carter to Mr. Gale, and to meeting the defendant on the road between Lovedean and Horndean, on the 11th of July, at a quarter-past six o’clock. Complainant was accompanied by Emily Moody; Jannaway, who was walking, met them, when he said to complainant, "you’re off to the club upon Mr. Gale’s expense," and upon complainant asking what he meant defendant went up to him, put his fist in complainant's face, knocked him down, fell upon him, and hit him two or three times in the face after he was down.
Emily Moody, servant to Mr. Gale, and Ann Hoare, who witnessed the assault from her cottage gate at Dellkey, corroborated the evidence of complainant.—Fined 5s. for the assault, and costs 12s.
Defendant, upon declaring he would not pay, was put back, and, after sitting a short time upon the "stool of repentance," advanced to the table and paid the money.

A SQUABBLE BETWEEN NEIGHBOURS AND ASSAULT AT "HOG'S LODGE."

Ann Knight, a sharp-looking little woman, past the meridian of life, whose husband keeps a beershop, charged Joseph Jacobs, whose appearance denoted he had reached the full number of three score years and ten, with assaulting her on the 20th of July last, at Clanfield. The parties are next door neighbours, living under the same roof, known under the appellation of "Hog's Lodge" for generations past.
The complainant deposed to being the wife of John Knight, living at Hog's Lodge, and to the defendant Jacobs living next door. On Mondav, 20th July, at four o’clock, Wm. Jacobs (her son) went for a pint of beer, and the defendant (Joseph Jacobs) said complainant had stolen eight sovereigns of his; he then swung round his stick, which was a foldshore, when he fell upon his knees, and upon getting up pushed complainant with his arm back against the wall.
The above evidence was corroborated by a female witness, and the defendant fined 6d. and 9s. 6d. costs.—Paid.
