PETERSFIELD.
PETTY SESSIONS.—Tuesday.—Before Hon. J. J. Carnegie (chairman), J. Waddington, Esq., Capt. Sandeman, and J. D. Lewis, Esq., M.P.
— George Ralph and James Fisher pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing, at Hawkley, on Saturday, December 26th, 44 cabbages, the property of Joseph James Maberley, Esq. Two months' imprisonment with hard labour.
— Robert Berriman Stephens v. John Curtis,— Samuel Curtis v. Robert Beriman Stephens. —These two cases arose out of the same circumstances, and were, in fact, cross summonses for assault. The evidence was extremely conflicting, and the magistrates, in adjusting the balance of credibility, convicted the defendant in the first case, and adjudged him to pay a fine of 10s., with costs 13s. 6d.; and in the second case they dismissed the summons, with costs 11s. 6d., to be paid by complainant.
— Henry Gardner and Richard Gardner, brothers, were convicted, on the evidence of Samuel Dixon, chief warder of Woolmer Forest, of trespassing in search of game in Linchborough Enclosure, in the parish of Bramshott, on Sunday, December 20th, and were fined 1l. each, including costs.
— Robert Henry Stoneham, who was a short time since committed for trial at the next assizes on two several charges of misdemeanor and felony and was admitted to bail, was brought up in custody on a warrant issued for his re-apprehension, in virtue of a deposition made by one of his sureties, Mr. James Morgan, that he had reason to believe that he (Robert Henry Stoneham) was about to leave this part of the country, and praying to be released from his suretyship. — Prisoner said he thought he could procure other sureties if time were allowed, and he was therefore remanded till the next day.
