PETTY SESSIONS.Tuesday.—Present Sir J. Clarke Jervoise, Bart., M.P., (Chairman), J. Waddington, Esq., and Major Briggs.

—   John Deadtman and Thomas Elliott pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing apples from an orchard belonging to Thomas Amey, in the parish of Steep, on Friday, July 20th. Complainant stated that his only object in bringing the case before the Bench was to put a stop to the practice, and as defendants were generally well behaved boys, he asked the Magistrates to deal leniently with them. Fined 6d., costs 8s.

—   Thomas Waller, overseer of the parish of Steep, applied for a warrant for the apprehension of John Burnett, who had absconded, leaving his wife chargeable to the parish of Steep. It appeared from the evidence of complainant that Burnett had lately been occupying a farm in the parish of Ewhurst, in Surrey. and had thus obtained a settlement in that parish, but he had left his wife in the  parish of Steep, where he formerly lived, and she being destitute, had during the last three weeks been chargeable to the parish. The Magistrates, after hearing the case, suggested that the better course would be for the parish authorities of Steep to communicate with those of Ewhurst, that the wife might be passed to her husband’s settlement; this suggestion was adopted and the application withdrawn.

—   Henry Beagley, of Eastmeon, was brought up in custody charged by P.C. George Baker with being drunk and riotous on the previous evening, fined 5s., costs 3s.

—   Edmund Harris applied for a warrant to eject Ann Welch from a cottage on the Stroud. This case was heard at the last Bench and adjourned for proof of service of notice, which was now done and the warrant issued.

The following were sworn in as members of the 12th Hants Rifle Volunteer Corps:—George Waller, Edmund Vick, Israel Bradley, Charles Whiting, Thomas Dean, John Caxon.
