— A PALTRY OFFENCE.— Charles Simmonds, a young man in the service of Mr. Richard Alden, of Coomb Farm, Eastmeon, appeared upon summons charged with stealing gooseberries of the value of 4d. The complainant stated the defendant was in his employ and lived in the house, and that on the morning of the 7th instant he saw defendant picking gooseberries from the bushes in front of the house. Defendant acknowledged picking the gooseberries, but said, ‟I was at work there, and went to get the scythe to mow the green, and in coming back up the path I stopped and picked about half-a-pint—not one more—which I ate.” Complainant requested the magistrates to be as lenient as possible it being defendant’s first offence. Fined 4d., and costa, 7s. 10d.
— ORDER OF REMOVAL— Mr. S. Padwick, overseer, of Eastmeon, applied for order for removal of Obadiah Miles (who had became chargeable through illness) to the parish of Woodlands, in the county of Dorset. The necessary proof being given the order was made.
— NOVEL APPLICATION FOR ADVICE.—Mr. White, of the George Inn, Eastmeon, applied to the magistrates for advice, stating that on the 1st of August the new act relating to the Assessment Committee comes into operation; and as the following day, the 2nd, is appointed for hearing appeals, he wished for advice as the act required 21 days’ notice of appeal to be given. The magistrates declined to give an opinion until the day appointed for hearing the appeals.
