PETERSFIELD.
PETTY SSESSIONS, Tuesday.—Present: Hon. J. J. Carnegie (chairman). Right Hon. Sir W. G. H. Jolliffe, Bart.. Sir A. K. Macdonald, Bart , Sir W. W. Knighton, Bart., Sir J. C. Jervoise Bart, M.P., and J. Waddington, Esq.
LICENSES.—This was the annual licensing day for publichouses, the whole of which were renewed, having been only one case of complaint within the division during the past year. This was for selling beer during the prohibited hours on Good Friday. The Chairman reminded the applicant of the fact, and briefly cautioned him as to the future.
UNRULY BOYS.—Two boys from Clanfield named William Aldred and James Withers were convicted of an assault on Mr. John Poate. Complainant deposed that on Sunday morning the 17th of August, he was on his way to church about ten o'clock when the two defendants addressed some very impertinent language to him, of which he took no notice whatever, and when they had passed him about 15 yards they threw a flint stone and struck his umbrella, which he was carrying open, as it was raining at the time. He produced the flint, which was as big as a hen’s egg, and also the umbrella, which was cut through. Defendants were adjudged to pay 4s. each, fine and costs, and the Chairman told them that if they were brought up again they would be liable to be sent to prison without the option of a fine.—[In reference to this case a correspondent writes: In the village of Clanfield stands the parish church, and near to it there are two dissenting places of worship, in addition to which there are three schools—yet, lamentable to say, the conduct of some of the rising generation of boys is truly reproachful, nor indeed can you be certain to pass even unmolested on the Queen's high road without the liability of your person being assailed as above.— A SHAME.]
SPECIAL SESSIONS.—The following days were fixed by precept as special sessions for transferring licenses in cases of death or removal during the ensuing year, viz., Oct 30th, Dec. 9th, Feb 3rd., April 14th, June 9th and August 4th.
