PETTY SESSIONS, TUESDAY. — Present, Honourable J. J. Carnegie, chairman, Sir W. Knighton, Bart., J. H. Waddington, and G. Forbes Esqrs.

—   A highway rate for the parish of Emshott, was signed.

—   James Smith and Charles Harris, were brought up by Mr. Superintendent Fey, charged with stealing one cotton shirt and one cloth waistcoat, the property of John Norman. It appeared from the evidence that the prisoners applied for lodgings on Sunday evening, the 13th instant, at the beer-shop in College-street, kept by Barnard Oliver; they slept in the same room with Norman, who was a permanent lodger in the house. Norman got up on Monday morning about half-past six and went to his work, leaving the boys in bed, and also leaving his Sunday clothes in the room. The boys left the house between seven and eight, and soon after they were gone, Mrs. Oliver, the landlady, missed the shirt and waistcoat. Information was given to Mr. Superintendent Fey, who, with his usual promptitude, immediately went in pursuit of the delinquents and overtook them near Homdean; he brought them back to the police-station, when the missing articles were found upon them,—Smith wearing the shirt, and Harris the waistcoat. Prisoners elected to be tried by the Bench, and both pleaded guilty. Sentence —three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
