PETERSFIELD.

Agent—MR. G. DUPLOCK

PETTY SESSIONS. — On Tuesday before J. Waddington, Esq., (chairman), Major Briggs, and Captain Sandeman.

     —  George Russell was charged with having unlawfully in his possession six rabbits.—Defendant was met by P.C. John Moore on Thursday, April 22nd., in a road leading from Coomb to Eastmeon with the six rabbits and 84 wires in his possession.—He pleaded not guilty on the ground that he had permission  from Mr. James Lock to take the rabbits.—Mr. Lock, however, on being called, deposed that about four years ago, in consequence of the rabbits on his farm having become very numerous, he gave defendant permission to catch them, but that upwards of 12 months ago he ordered him to desist from doing so, and that some time after this prohibition he caught him trespassing in pursuit of rabbits on his land and cautioned him.—Defendant was convicted and fined 10s. 6d. with costs 9s. 6d., or, in default, 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour. He was removed in custody.

     —  George Voller was convicted on the evidence of James Webb of taking two pheasant's eggs from a nest in the parish of Chalton, on Sunday, April 25th.—A former conviction was proved against the defendant, and he was fined 10s. and 9s. 6d., or 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour. He was removed in custody.

     —  Henry Fly and Henry Moore were charged with taking one pheasant's egg from a nest in the parish of Buriton, on Sunday, April 25th.—Moore was discharged and Fly was fined 5s. and 9s. 6d. costs, or 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour. He was removed in custody.

     —  Luckin v. Watts.—This was an application for an order of ejectment from a cottage at Privett. Notice had been served on defendant to quit at Ladytide last, but from the evidence of complainant as to the tenancy, it became evident to the magistrates that it was a Michaelmas, and not a Ladytide hiring, and the case was dismissed.

     —  The inspectors for lighting the town verified their accounts in accordance with the requirements of the act.
