PETERSFIELD.

PETTY SESSIONS,Tuesday.—Present: Sir J. Clarke Jervoise, Bart., M.P., Sir A. R. Macdonald, Bart, and J. Waddington, Esq.

  • A lighting rate of 5¼d.  on homes and 1¾d. on land was signed for the parish of Petersfield.
  • ASSAULT.—Isaac Poore was charged with assaulting William Corpen, on Monday, July 28th. The parties worked for Mr. John Bennett, of Colemore, defendant as Carter and complainant as boy under him. On the day in question they were at hay-cart, when the boy let a lock of hay slip from the load, whereupon defendant struck him several times violently with a whip, breaking the whip handle, and causing a wound which was described by a witness who saw it the next day as being quite raw and of considerable size, and appeared to have been produced by the butt-end of a whip.—Fined 12s. 6d., costs 7s. 6d. or ten days’ imprisonment with hard labour.
  • ANOTHER ASSAULT.—Eliza Low charged Sarah Elston with assaulting her on Saturday, 5th July, at Liphook. Defendant did not deny having committed the assault, but put in a plea of ‟served her right,” alleging that complainant had said things about her that would rouse the temper of a person lying dead in her grave.—Complainant deposed that she was passing the Railway Tavern about half-past six on Saturday evening, on her way home, when defendant rushed out and struck her in the face four times with her fist, and using a very bad word, vowed she would kill her if it took her a month to do it.—Fined 5s. and costs 7s. 6d. In consequence of the violent threat used by defendant, the Magistrates were inclined to bind her over to keep the peace, and complainant was recalled and asked if she thought defendant was likely to carry her threat into execution, to which, not quite understanding the question, she waively replied, ‟Yes, sir, I think ‘execution’ quite good enough for her.”
