PETERSFIELD

PETTY SESSIONS.—On Tuesday, before J. Bonham Carter, M.P., J. Waddington, Esq., Major Briggs, and Captain Sandeman.

     — Henry Ifould, landlord of the "Cricketers" public house, in the parish of Steep, was charged with selling beer at an illegal hour on Sunday, August the 30th. Mr. Bonham Carter retired from the bench during the hearing of this case. The defendant said he was always very particular in not selling anything on Sunday mornings, except to travellers, but in this case a man named Carpenter had some friends come to see him from Portsmouth, and he came and requested his (defendant's) wife to let him have three pints of beer, which she did. Superintendent Bennett, in answer to a question from the bench, said he had no complaint to make of the house. Defendant was fined 1l. and 9s. 6d. costs.

     — Six poor widows of Petersfield and two from the parish of Sheet, were excused their poor rates on the ground of poverty.

     — Thomas Waller, of Steep Farm, applied for a game license, which was granted.

     — A distress warrant was issued against Daniel Lee, of Petersfield, for non-payment of a poor rate, as ordered last bench day.

     — Thomas Waller applied for a warrant of ejectment against Edward Atkins, who did not appear. Applicant's son proved the due service of the notice, and Mr. Waller stated that he had repeatedly offered to forego the whole of the rent due if the defendant would give up possession, but he refused to do so. A warrant was granted.
