PETTY SESSIONS, Tuesday.—Present: Sir J. C. Jervoise, Bart, MP. (chairman), Sir W. Knighton, Bart., and J. Waddington, Esq.
— An order was signed for the removal of William Fosbury. a pauper, from the parish of Eastmeon to the parish of West Worldham.
— STEALING A NECK OF MUTTON.—Christopher Lejeune, a well-dressed young man, was brought up in custody, charged with stealing at Liphook, on Wednesday, 18th ult., part of a neck of mutton, weighing 3lbs., the property of James Wakeford. Prisoner, who is quite a stranger, was seen by a little boy named William White to take the piece of mutton from the prosecutor’s window, as he was passing along the road about eight o’clock in the morning, and to put it under his arm and walk off with it in the diction of Petersfield. P.C. Thomas Marchant, on being informed of the case, set off for Petersfield by the next train, and on his arrival there proceeded at once to the entrance of the town from the Liphook road, and there, close by Churcher’s College, he was accosted by a person who asked him the road to Portsmouth. The dress and appearance of the querist agreeing with the description given by the boy White of the person who had taken the meat, which Marchant requested to know the contents of a parcel which the traveller had under his arm. The parcel was immediately handed to him, and he found therein, among other things, part of a neck of mutton, whereupon he took him into custody on the charge of stealing it.Prisoner elected to be tried by the Bench, and pleaded guilty. Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
— AN INDISCREET CARTER SEVERELY PUNISHED.—George Ralph, a carter in the employ of Mr. Henry Warner, of Hawkley, was charged with stealing three gallons of barley, the property of his master. This was one of those cases in which a Carter, from a foolish pride in getting his horses up into good sleek condition, takes upon himself to appropriate his master’s corn for this purpose. The case was was clearly proved by a boy named Benjamin Corpes, who was employed as under carter, and whom prisoner took with him to the barn at five o’clock on the morning of the 26th ult., and who assisted him in getting the barley, which was afterwards found mixed with oats in the corn bin of the stable. Prisoner elected to be tried by the Bench, and pleaded guilty. Mr. Nejamin Warner, son of prosecutor, said he did not wish for the infliction of a severe punishment, as, with the exception of this case, prisoner was a very well-conducted servant. Sentence, one week’s imprisonment with hard labour.
