PETERSFIELD.]—PETTY SESSIONS.—At the Town Hall, on Tuesday last, the following cases came before the presiding magistrates, the Hon. J. J. Carnegie (chairman), Sir A. Macdonald, and J. Waddington, Esq.—Overseers and parochial constables’ lists were presented for the several parishes within the division of this court for the year ensuing, comprising the following parishes:—Buriton, Chalton, Clandfield, Catherington, Colemore, Eastmeon, Empshott, Froxfield, Greatham, Hawkley, Liss, Petersfield, Steep, Prior’sdean, and Street. The names of respectable persons for the different parishes were accepted by the magistrates, and due forms of the offices were signed, and presented to each officer appointed.
Assault Case.—John Mundy, a fly man, summoned James Stephens, a rival, for abusive and insulting language, threatening to smash his (plaintiff’s) head. This was not without some considerable provocation, which raised the defendant’s ire. Several melées between the two parties have recently taken place near the railway station, which has caused a bad feeling to exist between them. Judgement, defendant bound in his own recognisance of £10, with two sureties of £10 each, to keep the peace for six months. The plaintiff, for abusive language to a gentleman of the name of Goodeve, a short time since, barely escaped the law. We should advise him to learn how to conduct himself for the future.
Two or three cases of poaching were disposed of, by fining the parties convicted.
