PETERSFIELD.
PETTY SESSIONS, TUESDAY,—Before the Hon. J. J. Carnegie, J. Waddington, Esq., and J. Bonham Carter, M.P.
ASSAULT.—George Merritt was charged with assaulting William Simms, landlord of the ‟George,” Eastmeon. Complainant deposed that on the 12th inst., about 12 o’clock at night, Merritt came to his bar and asked for a gallon of beer. He refused him as he owed a score before. He then struck him two or three times, and witness turned him out of the house. He came in again and struck him on the forehead, and gave hime two black eyes. Emily Eldridge, a servant to complainant, and William Love, a blacksmith at Eastmeon, gave corroborative evidence. Defendant said, ‟As to that man there, I s’pose you all know him. He’ll join any side where he can get most beer.” Fined 1s. and 9s. 6d. costs. Paid.
William Latter was charged by James Windybank with assaulting him at Clanfield on the 14th instead. He was fined £2 and costs 9s. 6d., or 6 weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour. Paid.
William Amey was charged with assaulting Mr. Ebenezer Durman, registrar of births and deaths of No. 2 district of the Petersfield Union. The defendant requested an adjournment for a fortnight to allow him the opportunity of getting legal advice, which was granted.
THREATENING TO DO FOR ME.—Martha Trussler, the wife of George Trussler, lately sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, at Winchester, for the manslaughter of William Trussler, his father, at Bramshott, applied for protection from her sister-in-law, Ann Envis. It appeared from the evidence of complainant, that the widow of the old man, and herself were coming home from the trial at Winchester, when Ann Envis entered their house, abused her, and threatened to do for her.
After some consultation, the bench decided on binding both parties over in £5 each, to keep the peace towards each other for the space of 12 months.
George Mitchell, was charged by William King (both being in the service of the South Western Railway Company,) with stealing straw.
He was sentenced to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for twenty one days in the house of correction, at Winchester.
