The only criminal case was a summons for assault. Harriet Underwood charged Elizabeth Clarke with striking her and pushing her against a wall contrary to the statute in that case made and provided. It appeared that the parties occupy adjoining cottages on Stroud Common. On Monday, the 21st ult., plaintiff found, on her return home from Petersfield, a rail placed across a certain pathway over which she had a right to pass. She asked defendant why she had placed it there, to which the latter replied ‟for a leaping bale for you,” whereupon plaintiff procured an axe and proceeded to knock down the obstruction, when defendant struck her and pushed her against the wall. Defendant replied that she had placed the rail there in order to prevent her own children from annoying Mrs. Underwood, as the latter had complained of their having done so the day before. Fined 6d. for the assault and 10s. 6d. costs, or ten days’ imprisonment. The money was paid.
