AMATEUR CONCERT.—On Thursday evening last the members of the Petersfield Singing Class gave a vocal concert at the Dolphin Assembly-room, under the direction of Mr. Finley. The room was completely crammed, many persons being unable to obtain seats and several not even a standing place. The programme, which was selected with excellent taste, comprised glees, a duet for treble voices, and several songs, and the execution of the whole did both the performers and the conductor great credit. The glees were sang with much precision and good taste, and each piece was greeted with rapturous applause. ‟The Stirrup Cup,” by Arditi, was admirably sung by Mr. Lawrence, of this town, and on its being encored he substituted a patriotic song. The same gentleman also gave Barker’s splendid song ‟The White Squall,” which he rendered with excellent effect, and was again rapturously encored, when he substituted a song by Shield. The songs ‟Sing, birdie, sing,” and ‟Still let me sing to thee,” were given in an unaffected and pleasing manner by Miss Fanny Adams, *** who also took the soprano part in ‟The Gipsy Girls,” her sister, Miss Margaret Adams, taking the contralto. The latter also gave ‟Maggie’s Secret,” with much taste and spirit, and each received such vociferous encores as could not be resisted. Indeed, with scarcely an exception, the whole of the pieces were encored, thus giving sufficient proof of the great pleasure the audience derived from the performance, and we are sure all present heartily concurred with the Rev. J. M. Sumner who, at the close of the concert, congratulated the Amateurs on the proficiency they had attained under the instructions of Mr. Finley, and also congratulated Mr. Finley on the success which had attended his efforts. The compliment was duly acknowledged by Mr. Finley in a concise and appropriate speech.
