PETERSFIELD, Saturday, April 25
PETERSFIELD UNION.—The first meeting of the Board of Guardians for the present year was held in the boardroom of the Union Workhouse on Thursday, the 16th inst., when the guardians present unanimously re-elected Mr. Edward Shenton chairman, and Mr. R.G.P Minty vice-chairman, for the ensuing year, both elect have filled those situations for several years past to the satisfaction of all parties.
The other guardians are the same as were elected last year, viz.:—
Buriton, Edward Shenton; Colemore, the Rev. Thomas Harvey; Eastmeon, John Christmas and James Lock; Froxfield, John Etherington; Greatham, Edward Duddy; Liss, William Ayling; Petersfield, Richard George Pern Minty, John Underdown, and John Lucas; Priorsdean, Stephen Munday; Privett, John Pratt; Steep, Charles Chase; Sheet, Henry Elkington; Hawkley, James Barnard; Empshott, Henry Warner.
It is very seldom that any change takes place in the annual election of guardians, some of the present members having continued in office many years. We may congratulate the late board, as well as its predecessors, on the regular and punctual attendance of its members, as well as the interest they have invariably taken in the affairs of the Union generally, and the care and wellbeing of the poor, with the aged and infirm, whilst the interests of the ratepayers have not been forgotten or neglected. The guardians, as a body, are also kind and considerate to their officers, who appear to efficiently discharge the various duties imposed upon them, some having held their present situations upwards of thirty years— the clerk (Mr. Albery) having held his appointment from the first meeting of the guardians, at the formation or the Union, in April, 1835. The business of the board has always been conducted in suoh an amicable and conciliatory manner, and the guardians are generally so unanimous in all their proceedings, as to entitle them to no secondary position with any board in the county.
