CRICKET.—Petersfield Club v. the Officers of Portsmouth Garrison. This match which, from the éclat attending the two matches played here by the same parties last year, excited more than ordinary interest—came off on Monday last. It was to have been a two days’ match, but Tuesday being so extremely wet the wickets were not pitched on that day. The officers arrived on Monday by the 11ֺּ‧30 train, and proceeded at once to the Heath, where they found their competitors awaiting their arrival, ‟their souls in arms and eager for the fray.” The officers having won the toss, Peake and Agle opened the batting. The former lost his wicket by the first ball, and five others fell so rapidly that the score presented only about one run for each wicket up to the seventh, when Bell went in and fetched 37. Taylor made 25, and at the close of the innings the score reached 77. Petersfield then went in and ran up 130. Double figures were made by Eager 27, Whicher 25, and Carter 15. The one innings on each side just filled up the first day, and the stumps were drawn with the intention of resuming play next day, but as the weather prevented this the result was a drawn game in favor of Petersfield.. The following is the score:—
