POOR-LAW UNIONS (VALUATION LISTS) FOR HAMPSHIRE.— Upon the motion of Mr. Sclater- Booth, a return has just been issued of the names of the Unions in England and Wales, showing in which of them the valuation lists had been completely revised and returned approved of up to April, 1867, together with the total amount of rateable value upon which the contributions to the common fund were calculated at Lady Day, 1866, and the amount of the rateable value as settled by the Assessment Committee in the lists in force in April, 1867, with the difference between the two, &c. It appears from this return that the number of Unions included in it is 600; that the number of those where the valuation lists have been completed is 581, and, therefore, that the number of those not completed is 19. The total amonnt of the rateable value in the Unions of England and Wales completely revised was, in 1866, £74,680,684; in 1867, £77,377,432; being an increase of £2,696,748. The amount of the expenses incurred by the committee, and paid by the Boards of Guardians of these Unions, from the 25th of March, 1866, to the 25th of March, 1867, was £32,890, and the amount of the costs incurred by the guardians in appeals against the poor rate during the same period was £4912.
With reference to the Unions in the county of Southampton, the amount of the rateable value as settled by the Assessment Committee in the lists last approved (1867) was as follows:— Alresford, £42,178; Alton, £61,812; Andover, £100,331; Basingstoke, £106,281 ; Catherington, £13,526; Christchurch, £61,140; Droxford, £56,844 ; Fareham, £69,990; Fordingbridge, £34,291; Hartley Wintney, £58,850; Havant, £36,843; Hursley, £18,251; Kingsclere, £44,156; Lymington, £44,520; New Forest, £54,035; Petersfield, £46,052; Portsea Island, £270,482; Ringwood, £24,857; Romsey, £45,715; South Stoneham, £121,493; Stockbridge, £49,396; Whitchurch, £40,175; Isle of Wight, £262,567; and Winchester, £133,825. The amount of the rateable value of these several Unions, on which the contribution was calculated at Lady Day, 1866, was £1,783,340, and the amount of the rateable value as settled by the Assessment Committee in the lists last approved (1867) was £1,797,610, being an increase of £14,270. The amount of the expenses incurred by the committee, and paid by the Boards of Guardians of these Unions from the 25th of March, 1866, to the 25th of March 1867, was £734; and the amount of the costs incurred by the guardians in appeals against the poor rate during the same period was £338.
