POOR RATES AND PAUPERISM

    A Parliamentary return on this subject in pursuance of an order of the House of Commons, on the motion of Mr. Villiers, has just been issued. It has been very carefully compiled, and contains in a large mass of statistical information of general importance much that is of especial interest to this district.

The following synopsis of occupations of persons of 20 years of age and upwards affords so sufficient an account of the numbers and industries discussed in each group, that it well deserves the attention of all interested in this national question:—
