Portsmouth Railway.

     Cutting the first turf, at Buriton, near Petersfield. To-day this will be done. The following are the principal official arrangements :—

 ‟Mr. Francis Mowatt, the Chairman of the board of Directors, will open the proceedings with an address, and call upon Mr. John Bonham Carter, M.P., Lord of the Manor of Buriton, to cut the first turf. 

‟Mr. J. E. Errington, the engineer of the Company, will hand Mr. Bonham Carter the spade and barrow, and point out the spot at which the work is to be commenced, and state the extent of the work, the staff to be employed on it, and the probable time which will be occupied in its completion.

‟Mr. Bonham Carter will cut the turf and wheel it to the tip—the Directors following him.

‟Three cheers for the success of the undertaking, led by the engineer.

‟Mr. Bonham Carter to address the meeting on the advantages of the railway to the district.
