AN OLD STORY.—At the Magistrates Clerk's Office on Wednesday, before the Mayor, JOHN WILSON, labourer, was charged with maliciously breaking a lamp in the High-street.—P.C. Marshall said he was on duty in the parish of St. Mary's the previous evening, when he heard a lamp smashed. Looking round he saw the prisoner, and asked him why he had broken the lamp, he said, "To get a night's lodgings," and I took him into custody. Mr. Shaw, manager at the Gas Works, said the value of the lamp was 2s. 6d. Prisoner: I am very sorry, sir, now that this occurred, but I had walked from Petersfield in a drenching rain, and when I arrived at Guildford, I applied for relief at the County Police Station, and at the relieving officers but was refused. I was making my way to London. The prisoner was committed for 14 days’ with hard labour.
