SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9.

The Asylum Ball, held at St. John's House, on Tuesday, was well attended by the principal gentry of the city and neighbourhood, and dancing was kept up with much spirit until a late hour.

Borough Court.—Before the Mayor and other Justices. —James Matchwick was charged with feloniously embezzling 20l. and upwards, the property of his master, Mr. Geo. Peaty, of the Square, in this city, baker.—It appeared that Mr. Peaty supplies both of the regiments stationed at the barracks with bread. The prisoner, who has been in Mr. P.'s employ about six months, usually took the bread to the barracks in a cart every morning and afternoon. Mr. P. generally gave his weekly bills for the bread to the prisoner to collect of the pay-sergeants of the different companies of the regiments. On last Friday afternoon, Mr. Peaty gave the prisoner the usual weekly bills to collect of the pay-sergeants of the 4th regiment, and the prisoner received nearly the whole of them, amounting to 23l. On the following morning Mr. Peaty was informed that the prisoner was in custody at the county police station. It was stated by Mr. Hale, one of the county police, that he stopped the prisoner near Standen-gate, on the Romsev-road, at about five o'clock on Friday afternoon, and asked him where he was going to in such a hurried manner. His answer being very unsatisfactory, he brought him to Winchester, searched him at the station, and found 23l. odd on him, when the prisoner told him to go to Mr. Peaty, who knew all about it. The prisoner was fully committed for trial at the next sessions.
