RAILWAY ACCIDENT.—Considerable anxiety was felt here on Monday evening last, owing to the non-arrival of the down train which was due at 8.59, but which did not reach here till a quarter before eleven. The cause of the delay turned out to be the breaking of one of the axles of the engine carriage, which took place near the Malden station. The engine was thrown off the rails, and was rapidly making for the edge of the embankment, but the driver, being on the alert, was enabled by the prompt application of the break, to stop its progress in time to avert what must otherwise have proved a frightful catastrophe.
