PETERSFIELD.]—RAILWAY ACCIDENT.—On Wednesday, the 14th instant, a labouring man of the name of William Pierson, of Steep, foolishly crossed the railway metals at the Petersfield station just as the up express train was nearing the station, at 11.35, and, in consequence of the poor man being deaf, he was knocked down by the buffer of the engine, and hurled some distance sideway on the line, fracturing two of his ribs. The greatest miracle was that he was not killed on the spot. Fortunately medical assistance was speedily in requisition, when every possible attention was paid to the sufferer, and he was sent to his home by a special conveyance. The station master, Mr. Jackson, with his assistants, were unremitting in their attention, and no blame whatever is attributable to any of the servants of the Company. From enquiries on Thursday evening, we regret to state that the man is in a very precarious state.
