PETERSFIELD.] —AN ACCIDENT—occurred last Saturday, on the Direct London and Portsmouth branch of railway. It appears that on the departure of the train that passes through Liss, at 9 p.m., the different gates at the level crossings are shut across the line, and chained, and the gatekeepers retire for the night. Owing, however, to the Christmas holidays, the traffic was so heavy as to necessitate the employment of two engines to convey the last Portsmouth train to London. It appears that the rule of the company is, that the second engine, after assisting to convey the train to Guilford, shall immediately return to Portsmouth. This the gatekeeper at Prince’s-gate does not seem to be aware of, and consequently closed and locked his gates as usual. The result was that the return engine dashed through the gates with fearful violence, fortunately without throwing the engine off the rails, or causing any serious injury to the parties on the engine. We understand the gateman has since been discharged. Much sympathy has been felt for him in this neighbourhood, as, in addition to being a very steady man, he lost his leg on the line, in its formation.
