RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE

BASINGSTOKE.—On Wednesday and Thursday, the 23rd and 24th of October, the autumnal meeting of the Hants Association was held in the London-street Chapel, Basingstoke. On the 23rd the Rev. A. Johnson, late of Hurstbourne Tarrant, was recognised co-pastor with the Rev. James Wiles, who, for upwards of twenty-four years, has been the Minister of the Congregational Church assembling in the above chapel. After reading the Scripture and prayer by the Rev. A. Moreland, of Petersfield, the introductory discourse was delivered by the Rev. J. Cousens, of Portsea; the Rev. J. S. Pearsall, of Andover, then asked the questions usually proposed on such an occasion, and Mr. Johnson gave answers perfectly satisfactorily to the associated ministers present. The Rev. J. Reynolds, of Romsey, presented the designation prayer, and the Rev. Thomas Guyer, of Ryde, gave the charge to the minister. On the following evening the Rev. Thomas Adkins, of Southampton, preached to the church and congregation. On the morning of the 24th a public breakfast of the Hants Sunday-school Union was held in the school-room adjoining the chapel. At eleven o'clock the Rev. W. Warden, A.M., of Ventnor, preached on "The ground and extent of Christian union, with the best means of promoting it," being a subject appointed at the Spring association.
