PETERSFIELD, Saturday, August 15

SERIOUS ACCIDENT.—On Saturday an accident, fortunately not of a fatal nature, happened to two men, named John Burgess and John Eades, who were in the employ of Mr. Forder, upon one of the kilns at the lime works at Buriton, and were in the act of setting the chalk crowning of the arch. It appears that at the time a cart, heavily loaded, was on its way down the tramway from the  pit above, when the breakpin suddenly snapped, and the cart started off at a fearful pace to the bottom, where it came in contact with the bank or cross timber placed for stoppage with such force as to throw the chalk upon and over the kilns to the road beyond, some of the pieces weighing over a hundredweight each. The unfortunate men were taken up, and Burgess was found to have received severe injuries on his head, and his left shoulder joint was broken. Eades was more fortunate, having suddenly placed himself in a safer position, but not without receiving severe injuries on the head. Medical aid was soon upon the spot, and the unfortunate sufferers are favourably progressing, under the skilful treatment of Messrs. Whicher, Cross, and Prince, of this town.
