CAMBRIDGE TOWN.
SINGULAR CASE OF DESTITUTION.—A woman, respectably dressed, but having a melancholy and pitiable look, was brought up, under the direction of the Superintendent, charged with being in a state of destitution. She was seen upon the Trumpington Road, but declined to give her name when taken into custody. Upon being questioned to day, she gave the name of Ann Tanner.
— Mr. WARREN: Where do you come from?
— Woman: From London, and being near Cambridge, thought I would come.
— MAGISTRATES’ CLERK: What parish do you belong to?
— Woman: I was born at Steepe, near Petersfield, Hants.
— Dr. PHELPS: Have you any means of subsistence?
— Woman : None whatever.
— Dr PHELPS: Have you ever been in any occupation?
— Woman: I have been a teacher?
— Mr. FAWCETT: Where did you sleep last night?
— Woman: In a field, and the night before as well.
The BENCH ordered a policeman to take her to the Relieving Officer, in order that she might receive assistance as she required.
