THE PORTSMOUTH DIRECT RAILWAY.—NOT ALTOGETHER SOLD.—An incident occurred on Tuesday last, in connection with this Railway, which showed that the Portsmouth people are not entirely sold. On the day in question a Government Inspector and the Managing Directors of the South Western and Direct Railways, ratified to some extent the contract of the latter, by travelling upon the line from Godalming to Havant in a special train. On reaching Havant their progress was stopped, the officials of the Brighton and South Coast Railway having received orders to lock their line against them, the Act not giving the South Western but the Direct Railway Company alone, power to travel over the South Coast line. In consequence of this event, the train returned to Petersfield and then to Godalming without having left the Direct line. There is evidently some hope for Portsmouth yet.
