We regret to announce the sudden death of Lieut.-General Sir Richard Downes Jackson, K.C.B. at Montreal on the 9th of June, of apoplexy. He had been at church the day before (Sunday), in his usual good health, and was only awaiting the arrival of his successor, in command of the forces in Canada, Lieut.-General Lord Cathcart, from England. Major General Sir James Hope, from Québec, proceeded to Montréal to attend the funeral, and has taken the temporary command of the troops in both Canadas. Lieut.-General Sir Richard Jackson was the son of Christopher Jackson, of Petersfield, Hampshire; he was born in 1776, and entered the army in his sixteenth year as Ensign in the 2nd Foot. He was honoured with the Cross and two Clasps for his services at the battles of Barrosa, Fuentes D'Onor, Salamanca, Nivelle, Nive, and Orthes. He was created a Baronet in 1815. He obtained the Colonelcy of the 35th Regiment on the 15th June, 1840, and, at his demise, was in the 67th year of his age.
