PETERSFIELD.

MELANCHOLY AND SHOCKING SUICIDE.—Early on Monday morning last a sad and determined suicide, was committed at Tigwell farm in the parish of Eastmeon (near this town) by Mr. William Mellersh, a respectable farmer, which cast a melancholy gloom in and around this locality, in which he was well known and respected. It appears that about three o'clock he arose from his bed for the purpose of going to the water closet, when his wife becoming alarmed, proceeded downstairs and finding the door open and his gun gone aroused the family and servants, who at once commenced a search outsied the house, but from the darkness prevailing were unable to find him. During this time the report of a gun was heard in the orchard, a short distance from the house, when they hastened to the spot, and found the lifeless body of the unfortunate man lying with his gun discharged alongside. It seems that the butt of the gun had been placed upon the ground with the muzzle to the side, and had been fired by pressing back the trigger with a walking stick. Mr. Rogers, surgeon, of Westmeon, who had been attending the deceased, was soon upon the spot, and upon the body being examined, pronounced death to have been instantaneous. By this melancholy and desperate act, a widow and eight children are left to mourn over their sad affliction and bereavement.
