SUSSEX LENT ASSIZES

     The commission for holding these assizes was opened on Monday, the 24th instead of., at the County Hall, with the customary formalities. The Right Honourable Sir William Erle, Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, was the only judge in attendance.

     His lordship arrived at Lewes by the 2.25 train from Brighton, and at once proceeded to his lodgings and assumed his official robes. He then enteredd the carriage of the High Sheriff, the Hon. John Jervis Carnegie, of Fair Oak, Petersfield, and, escorted by the usual staff of javelin men and trumpeters, went to open the commission. …
