TALLOW FOR BEER.—At the Red Lion public house, in the parish of Chalton, the power of a strong stomach was put to the test in the unnatural consumption of tallow candles, by a man of the name of Edward Wells, aged about 20 years, and a native of the same place. It appears that the above named Edward Wells was at the house a short time since with a few others, where, for a wager of a quart of beer, he engaged to eat half a lb. of candles. He chose rush lights, which being obtained from Mr. Lilleywhite’s, grocer, &c., he took his position before the company on a stool, and in a masterly manner untallowed the rushes, without waste with his teeth, and with an unmistakeable relish, demolished the whole, during which accomplishment he drunk three or four glasses of ale, the great amusement of the assembled party. From the commencement to the finish only 12 minutes were consumed.
