THE DISTRESS IN LANCASHIRE.—On Sunday last the cause of the distressed operatives in Lancashire was most warmly and powerfully advocated in the parish church, where three sermons were preached on the subject, the heartrending circumstances of the case being described, and the necessity for liberal contributions most forcibly urged. We are glad to hear that a hearty response was made to the appeal, the collections amounting to something over 36l.

PETERSFIELD.]—THE THREE SERMONS—preached in Petersfield Church on Sunday, on behalf of the distressed Lancashire weavers, resulted in a sum being realised of £38. The master of the Petersfield British Schools, Mr. John Fairbairn, has also made a collection throughout his school for the same benevolent purpose, and in addition to the same object several of his senior scholars and pupil teachers are provided with collecting cards, which will be kept open for weekly receipts during the winter months. The youths are all very anxious in this philanthropic act, feeling deeply for their fellow countrymen who are now suffering such great privations and distress.
