HARTING.

ACCIDENT. —COMING HOME FROM THE RACES.— On Thursday last, two carriages and pairs, belonging to Mr. Craft, of Petersfield, were over-turned in descending Harting Hill. From what we have heard of the accident, it appears that one of the vehicles arrived at the summit of the hill only a few yards in advance of the other, and that the carriage in the rear had descended a short distance down the steepest part of the hill, when the pole broke; the horses, therefore were unable to keep back the carriage and although the driver of the vehicle in front drew as far out of the way as possible, the carriage with the broken pole dashed into the other with a fearful crash, and both upset. The carriages were a little damaged, and one of the horses slightly hurt. We regret to hear that both carriages were without drag shoes. The cause, therefore, of the accident may be attributed, like most other accidents, to want of of proper care and attention, for if the drag shoe had been used the accident would, in all probability, not have occurred. There were several persons in the carriages at the time, but all, we are happy to say, most miraculously escaped unhurt.
