PETERSFIELD.
VESTRY MEETING.—The annual vestry meeting for the election of guardians and churchwardens was held at the Town Hall, on Easter Monday, the Rector in the chair. Messrs. R. Peachey, J. Phillips, J. Fowler, and O. Broads were nominated as guardians, Mr. Tribe proposing that the meeting do request the magistrates to appoint two instead of one, as heretofore, remarking that there were 19 parishes in East Peckham Union, to which this parish belonged, and that this parish paid one-third of the expenses of the union, and had had but one representative at the guardians meetings, it was most important that we should have more than one guardian; our population now was about 8,000. This being seconded by Mr. Streeter, and two thirds of those present having voted for it, was declared carried. The rector appointed Captain Thomas Wisden as his churchwarden. Mr. Roberts proposed, and Mr. Ballard seconded, C. Horwood, Esq., as parish churchwarden, which was carried. Mr. Roberts—after asking Mr. Tribe if it was his intention to retire as churchwarden, and receiving a reply from that gentleman in the affirmative—moved the following resolution, viz. :—"That the cordial thanks of this parish are due to Mr. W. Tribe on his resigning the office of churchwarden, for his past valuable parochial services, extending a period of more than 50 years, and this vestry unanimously expresses an earnest wish that the remainder of his life may be spent in peaceful and happy retirement, and in consciousness of the goodwill and respect of all his fellow townsmen and parishioners." C. Horwood, Esq., seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously, and to which Mr. Tribe appropriately replied, saying that it had always been his endeavour to do his duty strictly and impartially.
